Such a great taste of India in Historic Mazatlan! It’s the real deal.

We sat on the sidewalk in comfy chairs on a balmy evening and, besides eating a tasty meal and a bottle of wine, enjoyed fun banter in fluent English and limp-along Spanish with the waiter, the owner, the passersby and neighbouring tables. Fresh and authentic ingredients – imported from India or from India via Canada! Definitely a welcome change from the sometimes delicious, sometimes not so great versions of local fare! We very much recommend it.

We’ve postponed eating here for years simply out of lack of convenience (since we live on the other side of town) until finally we got around to checking it out, all I can say is I’m going to eat here a lot now, Morenas is an outstanding Indian Food joint, back in our home town of SF we ate a lot of Indian food, Morenas is the real deal, the atmosphere is great, the staff is VERY attentive and the location is at Plaza Machado which is a perfect place to wind down after an excellent meal & Courtney & her man are rad!

Unlike some of the larger, more touristy restaurants around the Plaza Muchado, this place is small and intimate, and from our multiple visits here, it really offers a more rewarding dining experience.

Upon entering you will probably be greeted by the owner Courtney, who’s smile could light up any room. It’s obvious that she wants you to really enjoy your meal and will go out of her way to make that happen. As a vegetarian I didn’t see many options that I could choose from, however Courtney quickly offered to create special dishes for me. I chose one of her amazing Indian curries and I am so glad I did. The flavors were rich, yet true and each mouthful presented a real reward for my taste buds. The other members of our party enjoyed the shrimp curries and samosas just as much.

The house wines and beers are offered here at really fair prices which allows you to enjoy an amazing dinner without the wallet hurting.

So if you are heading to the Centro Historico make sure you know how to find Morenas. You will be very glad you did. Enjoy!!

Morena’s surprised me. A lot. Who knew that you could get not just solid, but stupendous Indian food in Mexico? Many of the restaurants that are upscale or offer anything more than tacos or molcatejes are fairly basic meat-and-potatoes gringo food.

Morena’s was on par with the quality of food I get in Portland, which is saying a lot. It’s better than 3/4 of the Indian restaurants I’ve had in Portland and better than all the Indian I experienced in London.

The recipes are done as far as I know authentically: the spice mixtures and flavors were right. The textures were right. And there was a little bit of innovation in there, but it wasn’t off-putting. In fact, I’m going to start putting broccoli in MY saag paneer now!

This is based on only one visit, so I can’t speak for the whole menu. But the fish pakoras (marlin) we got were crunchy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth on the inside. The adapted samosa (using wonton wrappers) lost nothing in translation–crispy, and filled with a well-spiced potato mixture.

The lamb curry was incredibly soft, warming, and delicious. Combined with the mint chutney this was incredible.

The service was familiar and friendly as well.

Do it!

WONDERFUL!! Just off the Plaza Machado; we enjoyed sitting at a table on the sidewalk in front. Delicious food, and be sure to ask the owners about how they came from Jamaica to Canada to Mexico!

When I’m in Mazatlan for an extended trip, I miss ethnic food, and Morena’s always satisfies my cravings. I haven’t tried anything that I didn’t like. The butter chicken is my favorite!!!
